Bird Friendly certification rests on the premise that a densely shaded coffee farm can do some of the work of forest. A study out of the Colombian Andes finds that the premise holds for a good many birds and fails for the ones that most depend on forest, and that what decides the difference sits outside the farm gate entirely.
