What we collect

Information you give us

If you submit the contact form, we receive whatever you put in it — typically a name, an email address, and your message. We use that solely to reply to you and to keep a record of correspondence. We don’t add contact-form submissions to a mailing list, and we don’t sell or share them.

Information collected automatically

Our web host records standard server logs — IP address, browser user-agent, the page requested, and the time of the request. These are used for security and to keep the site running, and they’re retained for a limited period by the host.

Comments

Comments are currently closed across the site, so no comment data is being collected.

Advertising and third-party cookies

This site is supported by display advertising. As a result, third parties — including Google and its advertising partners — may place and read cookies on your browser, or use web beacons and your IP address, to collect information when ads are served on this site. This information is typically used to select and measure the ads you see, and in some configurations to personalize them based on your prior visits to this and other websites.

Specifically, this site loads Google AdSense on every page, together with a consent management platform supplied by Admiral, which captures and stores your advertising choices and passes them to ad vendors. To be precise about the current state: AdSense is installed, but the site has not yet been approved to serve ads, so you won’t presently see advertising here. The tag and the consent layer are in place ahead of that approval, which is why this disclosure is here now.

Your browser also offers controls for blocking or deleting cookies. Blocking them will not stop you reading anything here.

Consent

If you’re visiting from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you’ll be asked for consent before advertising and measurement cookies are set, through a consent management platform certified by Google. You can change or withdraw that choice at any time through the consent controls the platform provides, or by contacting us, and withdrawing consent doesn’t affect the lawfulness of processing carried out beforehand.

Where we rely on a legal basis other than consent — for example, replying to a message you sent us, or keeping the site secure — that basis is our legitimate interest in operating and defending the site.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how it’s processed, and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority.

If you’re a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected and how it’s used, to request its deletion, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information — which under California law can include the use of your data for cross-context behavioral advertising. To exercise the opt-out, contact us through the form linked above; once advertising is live, an opt-out control will also be available on the site itself. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and this site isn’t directed at children.

Retention

Contact-form correspondence is kept for as long as it’s useful to have a record of the exchange, and deleted on request. Server logs are retained by our host on their own schedule. Advertising cookies expire according to the vendor’s own retention periods, described in their policies linked above.

Where your data goes

Three third parties are involved in running this site. Hostinger hosts it and processes data on our behalf as our hosting provider. Google, through AdSense, is our advertising provider. Admiral supplies the consent management platform that records your advertising choices. Any of them may process data outside your country of residence, including in the United States. We don’t sell personal data in the ordinary sense of the phrase, though note that some US state privacy laws define “sale” and “sharing” broadly enough to cover targeted advertising — see the section on your rights above.

Embedded content

Articles may embed content from other sites — a video, a chart, a social post. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other site directly, and that site can collect data about you and set its own cookies. We keep embeds to a minimum for this reason.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes materially, we update the date at the top and note what changed. Adding a new analytics or advertising vendor counts as material, and we’ll say so here before or as it happens.
